Footpaths

There are lots of footpaths around Aberlleiniog Castle.

Some are designated as Public Paths, and others are permissive paths (paths that the land owner has given permission for the public to use).

The footpaths, bridges, boardwalks and steps were created in two phases, in 2007, and 2009. Prior to this, there was no public access at the site at all.

The access improvement work was funded by grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Cadw, the Welsh Assembly Government, the Sustainable Development Fund (a Welsh Assembly Government initiative in the Isle of Anglesey Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and Cydcoed (a Forestry Commission project funded by the European Union Objective 1 and the Welsh Assembly Government).

The footpaths that lead to the castle start at Llangoed car park, Lleiniog beach car park, and Haulfre Lane.

A) From Llangoed car park

The path from Llangoed car park leads from the back of the car park onto a concrete lane, with the river Lleiniog on the left hand side.  The lane follows the river downstream to a water treatment works, before the path enters the woodland (look out for the timber waymarker on the right hand side).  Here, there is a length of path of about 44 yards (40m) which is currently not suitable for wheelchair users.  After this, a timber wicket gate marks the start of the stone surfaced path, which continues for 273 yards (250m) or so, before reaching the timber bridge that crosses the river Lleiniog.  (Now see C).

B) From Lleiniog beach car park

Turn left at the car park entrance and follow the road for about 252 yards (230m), until you reach the start of the footpath at a timber kissing gate.  From here, the footpath passes through a wet meadow, and after about 459 yards (420m) reaches the timber bridge that crosses the river Lleiniog. (Now see C).

C) From the bridge over the river Lleiniog to the castle

After the bridge, the path continues for approximately 219 yards (200m) before reaching a timber boardwalk. At the top of the boardwalk, the path continues uphill to the castle, or veers left, leading up to the castle through a gently sloping meadow (this section is unsurfaced).  The route to the left is slightly longer than the one that goes straight on.  An unsurfaced path leads around the base of the castle, and the castle itself is reached by crossing a timber bridge which spans the moat.  Steps and platforms then lead up the side of the motte to the stone fort.

D) From Haulfre Lane

From the kissing gate entrance, the path leads gently downhill for about 109 yards (100m) before reaching a timber boardwalk.  At the bottom of the boardwalk, the path divides.  From here, the shortest route to the castle is to the left, following the unsurfaced path through the meadow.

The paths can be wet and muddy at times, especially after wet weather.  It is advisable to always wear walking boots or Wellingtons.

Other footpaths

There are many other footpaths in the vicinity of Aberlleiniog Castle.
There is a path opposite Llangoed car park that leads through the northern part of the Local Nature Reserve, and Lleiniog beach car park lies on the Anglesey Coastal Path .
The numerous Public Paths in the area are marked on Ordnance Survey Map 263 Anglesey East 1:25 000 scale.
